The Harbor Dental Society (HDS), founded in 1915, represents over 700 dentists across 28 cities in the Los Angeles Harbor area. As a component of the American Dental Association (ADA) and the California Dental Association (CDA), HDS is committed to advancing public dental health and upholding high ethical standards within the dental profession. The Society has a long-standing tradition of community impact, including initiatives. Helping to ensure the dental health of all children was a major force for the establishment of the Children's Dental Health Clinic and advocating water fluoridation in Long Beach. The Society also promotes the profession of dentistry by enhancing the integrity and ethics of the profession, strengthening the patient/dentist relationship, and making membership the foundation of successful practice. HDS supports its members with resources, research, education, and advocacy to promote excellence in dentistry and enhance patient care.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role based Executive Director position located in Lakewood, CA. The Executive Director (ED) serves as the Executive Officer, responsible for the Board of Directors for the Society's effective management and strategic direction. The ED serves as a strategic partner to the Board, shaping the Society’s mission, goals, and objectives while overseeing all staff, programs, and daily operations. The role requires a combination of administrative expertise, financial accountability, and the ability to mentor emerging dental leaders. The ED should be able to interface with a diverse membership population. Developing rapport with membership is crucial for membership and leadership engagement. The ED is a people-oriented leader with a warm, empathetic personality

Salary: $85K to $105K/yr with Benefit Package (Commensurate experience)

Core Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Board Partnership: Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, helping to implement mandates with by-laws and interim policies.
  • Management and Maintenance of By-laws
  • Vision Implementation: Lead the execution of the Society’s Strategic Plan, making sure it adapts to meet the needs of a diverse and changing membership.
  • Advocacy: Serve as the assists the Chairman of the board as Society's spokesperson, representing member interests alongside the President.
  • Policy Development: Develop innovative recommendations for projects, policies, and programs for Board review.
  • Manage Tripartite Relations .

2. Financial & Operational Management

  • Fiscal Oversight: Direct sound financial management, including annual budget preparation, long-range forecasting, and maintaining internal controls.
  • Accounting Procedures: Oversee weekly deposit entries and bi-weekly disbursements using modern accounting software to ensure budget control.
  • Contractual Integrity: Review, negotiate, and execute contracts on behalf of the association.
  • Risk & Records: Maintain all official files, records, and manuals while ensuring high standards of business ethics and confidentiality.

3. Member Engagement & Public Relations

  • Internal/External Relations: Maintain effective public relations and enhance the Society's overall image.
  • Member Support: Provide ongoing assistance to individual members, ensuring a management philosophy that prioritizes membership needs.
  • Inclusivity: Foster a welcoming environment that is inclusive of all dentists and allied professionals and that encourages "new views and new enthusiasm”. (Be amenable to and encourage member input)
  • Marketing: Both internal and external.

4. Personnel & Volunteer Management

  • Staff Supervision: Provide comprehensive personnel management, including recruitment, orientation, supervision, and annual performance evaluations.
  • Committee Coordination: Plan, organize, and staff meetings for the Board and committees, preparing agendas and reports to maximize volunteer efficiency.
  • Mentorship: Facilitate the transition of leadership by mentoring volunteers and encouraging a "new generation" of perspectives.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: A minimum of five years of administrative experience in association or business management.
  • Education: College degree preferred; Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation is highly desirable.
  • Communication: Strong Communicator with strong public speaking skills and writing skills and the ability to process and summarize complex communications for the membership
  • Technology: Be conversant with the latest information technology, social media, and communications.
  • Diplomacy: Proven ability to remain diplomatic when managing multiple projects, deadlines, and member requests.
  • Ethics: Unwavering commitment to ethical conduct, discretion, and the protection of confidential information.

Key Performance Attributes

  • Must-Have: Strong financial/budgeting skills, high ethical standards, and the ability to motivate volunteers.
  • Preferred/Tradable: CAE (Certified Association Executives) designation preferred but not required.
